The Football League 1891 - 1892
Following several instances of clubs turning out in clashing colours, the Football League introduced a rule requiring to clubs to register their colours so these could be recorded in the league handbook. Furthermore each team had to register distinctive colours leading several to adopt unfamilar shirts. The competition was expanded to 14 teams, Darwen and Stoke being elected. At the end of the season the bottom four clubs, as usual faced re-election but West Bromwich Albion as FA Cup holders, were excused. Darwen were not re-elected but were then given a place in the new Second Division, which was launched the following season.
