European Cup Finals 1980 - 1989

brian clough with the european cupUEFA took the decision to extend penalty shoot-outs to the final if the scores were level after extra time to avoid the need for replays. The dominance of English teams was brought to an enforced end by the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985 in which 39 Juventus supporters were killed and hundreds more injured. Hooliganism by English supporters was already a serious problem but following Heysel, English clubs were banned from European competition for five years. The tragedy also prompted severe criticism of safety at European stadia and over the following decade, all major grounds underwent major redevelopment and stringent safety regulations were introduced.

Nottingham Forest crashed out of the competition in the First round, losing 2-0 on aggregate to CSKA Sofia. However, Liverpool made it five in a row for English sides with their third victory. Bob Paisley became the first manager ever to have won three European Cups.

UEFA rules outlawed shirt sponsorship at the time so Liverpool had to conceal the Umbro branding on their kits with sticky tape.

The experienced Bayern team were expected to be too strong for the novices from Birmingham. After 10 minutes Villa's veteran goalkeeper had to go off with a shoulder injury and was replaced by Nigel Spink, making his second ever first team appearance. His performance helped keep Bayern from scoring and secured him a place as first choice for the next ten years. Peter Withe scored the winner after 64 minutes and both sides had goals disallowed in the closing moments.

Liverpool returned for their fourth final and faced an intimidating task against Roma in front of their own fans. Playing their familiar game, they stifled their opponents before pressing for a goal. They took the lead in the 15th minute but the home side equalised just before half-time. In the second half Roma pressed hard but as the game wore on, both sides became more cautious and there were few chances. For the first time the winner of the European Cup was decided by a penalty shoot-out.

The match was delayed for over an hour due to the rioting which took the lives of 39 Italian supporters. Officials decided not to abandon the game for fear that worse disorder would result and the full extent of the disaster was kept from the players. The match was played in a febrile atmosphere and it was clear that the players wanted nothing more than to get it over with. Juventus won after Platini converted a penalty but few were concerned with the result.

The 1986 final broke new ground: not only was it played in southern Spain for the first time, it produced an unlikely winner. Although the Romanian army team had a strong domestic record, they were not expected to be a match for the glamourous Catalan team. At the end of 120 minutes no goals had been scored and in the penalty competition that followed, Helmuth Duckadam saved all of Barca's kicks to earn the nickname of "Hero of Seville" (but in Romanian, obviously).

PSV secured a treble of Dutch Championship, Cup and European Cup but they needed penalties to do it. After a dull game, both sides scored with their first five kicks but Veloso had his attempt saved and Benfica lost their fourth final as a result. Five of the PSV team were in the Netherlands team that won Euro '88 in Germany later in the summer.

The Romanian team made a second appearance in the final but this time there would be no shock result. The Milan side, with it's trio of Dutch stars, Gullit, van Basten and Rijkaard, and wearing their lucky white kit was on the verge of greatness and they overwhelmed their opponents.
