European Cup Finals 1980 - 1989
UEFA took the decision to extend penalty shoot-outs to the final if the scores were level after extra time to avoid the need for replays. The dominance of English teams was brought to an enforced end by the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985 in which 39 Juventus supporters were killed and hundreds more injured. Hooliganism by English supporters was already a serious problem but following Heysel, English clubs were banned from European competition for five years. The tragedy also prompted severe criticism of safety at European stadia and over the following decade, all major grounds underwent major redevelopment and stringent safety regulations were introduced.
