UEFA Champions League Finals 2000 - 2009
The 2000-01 tournament was the most bloated so far, with 71 entrants, two groups stages and no fewer than 157 matches. Teams with multiple titles (five overall or three in succession) were now entitled to wear a "badge of honour" on their sleeves. A title-holder badge was introduced in 2004 that was distinct from the star ball patch worn by the other contestants.
Liverpool became the last club to win the trophy outright in 2005. (Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern Munich and AC Milan have also kept the trophy). Since 2009, the trophy remains in UEFA's possession permanently and clubs who record five wins overall or three in succession receive a full-size replica engraved with their name and are entitled to wear the badge of honour.
