UEFA Champions League Finals 2000 - 2009

dudek champions league trophyThe 2000-01 tournament was the most bloated so far, with 71 entrants, two groups stages and no fewer than 157 matches. Teams with multiple titles (five overall or three in succession) were now entitled to wear a "badge of honour" on their sleeves. A title-holder badge was introduced in 2004 that was distinct from the star ball patch worn by the other contestants.

Liverpool became the last club to win the trophy outright in 2005. (Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern Munich and AC Milan have also kept the trophy). Since 2009, the trophy remains in UEFA's possession permanently and clubs who record five wins overall or three in succession receive a full-size replica engraved with their name and are entitled to wear the badge of honour.

Real comfortably won their eighth European Cup/Champions League trophy. This was the first time that the finalists were from the same country.

Valencia returned to the final and took the lead with a penalty in the 2nd minute. Bayern had their own penalty saved moments later and eventually equalised - with a penalty - five minutes into the second half. There was no further scoring so the title was decided, appropriately enough, with a penalty shoot-out. With the scores still level after the first 12 kicks, Mauricio Pellegrino had his attempt saved and Bayern won their first Champions League trophy to add to their hat-trick of European Cups from the 70s.

Madrid were hot favourites but the German team put up a spirited fight. The decisive goal was scored by Zinedine Zidane in the 45th minute, a left footed volley into the top corner, and is widely regarded as one of the best ever scored in a European final.

The match started positively but in the second half, both teams played with caution, hoping to capitalise on a mistake by their opponents. Andriy Shevchenko scored the decisive penalty in the shoot-out.

The 2004 was contested by two teams that were ranked as outsiders when the tournament started. Porto were holders of the UEFA Cup and had last won the European Cup in 1987. Monaco had never previously played in the Champions League final. Porto dominated for much of the game and finished as comfortable winners.

Liverpool were the underdogs in their sixth final against a strong Milan side. The Italians were 3-0 up at half-time and appeared to be cruising to an easy victory but Liverpool scored three times in only six minutes to draw level. In extra time Liverpool tired and only two heroic saves by Dudek, who denied two close range efforts from Schevchenko, kept them in the match. Dudek then saved Schevchenko's penalty in the shoot-out to secure an unlikely win for the Reds. "The Miracle of Istanbul" is considered one of the greatest finals in the history of the competition.

Making their first appearance in the Champions League Final, Arsenal took the lead towards the end of the first half. Two late goals in a five minute spell killed off the Londoners' hopes and gave the Catalan side their second title, 14 years after they won the European Cup.

There was no repeat of the Miracle in Istanbul, Milan getting their revenge. Around 5,000 people with forged tickets were allowed in resulting in thousands of angry fans with genuine ones being locked out. Greek police used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd. UEFA blamed Liverpool supporters but soon faced fierce criticism for failing to anticipate the large numbers who would travel to Athens and having no means of detecting forged tickets.

With two English clubs in the final there was a certain irony that the match would for the first time be placed in Russia, about as far away as it is possible to get from London and Manchester. Since 2008 marked the 50th anniversary of the Munich disaster and the 40th year since United first won the European Cup, it was perhaps fitting that they won a thrilling match.

For the fifth season in a row, an English club featured in the final but United would not manage to retain their title. Barcelona took an early lead and settled into their usual style of patient, possession football, growing in confidence as the game wore on. A second goal mid way through the second half was all Barca needed to settle things.
