The Scottish Football League 1921 - 1922

In 1920 some of the former Second Division clubs that had survived since 1915, angered at the refusal of the SFL First Division clubs to reinstate the Second Division, formed the rebel Central League. Because they could pay higher wages than those allowed in the SFL, many leading players defected to their ranks and the competition became a serious rival. To remove the threat, it was agreed to reinstate the Second Division by incorporating the Central League and four additional clubs from the Scottish Alliance and Western League. For this reason the membership of the First Division was more or less unchanged from before the war but the enlarged Second Division was of a very different composition.

Automatic promotion and relegation between the top and bottom two teams was introduced although at the end of this inaugural season, three clubs were relegated and only one promoted to even up the divisions to twenty teams each.
