Irn Bru Scottish Third Division 2008 - 2009
The champions of the Scottish Third Division are automatically promoted to the Second Division while the clubs finishing second, third and fourth go into a play-off competition against the team finishing in ninth place in the Second Division to decide the remaining promotion place. There is no relegation from the third Division although a club that finishes last two seasons in a row is stripped of its full membership and effectively put on probation for two seasons, after which the SFL members vote on whether to re-elect the club.
Following the resignation of Gretna (who had been relegated to the Third Division, having been unable to guarantee that they could fulfill their fixtures) five clubs applied for the vacancy created. After three ballots, Annan Athletic achieved the votes they needed.

The Wee Rovers return to the red and yellow that has been their signature since the 1960s with a kit that revives the popular stripes worn between 2002 and 2006. Last season's away kit is retained as a third choice outfit.

Annan Athletic make their debut in the SFL wearing last season's kit, at least for the first few weeks. New kits were ordered immediately after the club was elected to Division Three in July but could not be delivered in time for the start of the Scottish season.
Thanks to Ian Raffel and Alick Milne.

Berwick's triumph as Third Division champions in 2007 now seems a long way off as they return to the basement after a single season. The team's home kit is unchanged but a new sponsor replaces Haggerston Castle, who have supported the team since 2003, an unusually long period at this level.
My thanks to Kevin McCormick.

Errea are known for producing bespoke kits but this season, these flowing lines have proved popular with a number of clubs both north and south of the border. Cowdenbeath normally wear kits based on those of Brazil (and are known as "the Blue Brazil" so this pair represent something of a break with recent tradition.
Thanks to Alec Hitchman and Alex Horsburgh.

Dumbarton have switched supplier from Vandanel to Surridge this season. The new home kit is in traditional gold and black with just a hint of white. The away kit, in blue and white is based on the same template.

The Shire narrowly avoided finishing last in 2008-09, a position that would have seen them reduced to associate membership and ultimately might have cost them their place in the SFL. The new season sees them homeless and sharing Stenhousemuir's Ochilview ground with no immediate prospect of a permanent home: prospects for this cash-starved club look poor. Last season the management indicated that a return to their traditional hooped shirts was likely but they have been unable to find a supplier. Instead, a new all-black home kit has been introduced (which has proved a popular item in the club shop) complemented by a change kit in red. The familiar white outfit now serves as a third choice.

Elgin's home and away kits are unchanged from last season but they have a new shirts sponsor. The new third kit is described as "diva blue."

Forfar's home kit is unchanged from last season, a smart outfit in two shades of blue with white trim, the club's usual colour scheme. A new red and black away kit appears with halved shirts, a very popular design this season. Last season's white and bilious green away kit is retained as a third strip.
In common with Macron's usual templates, the stockings have a contrasting panel on the reverse, although the turnovers retain their main colour.

Montrose retain their home and away kits from last season, both standard Nike templates introduced in 2006, and which feature a subtly shaded halved effect on the shirt. A brand new black third kit is added, relieved only by a white flash on the shirt.

The Warriors turn out in their usual maroon tops, embellished with two stylish slashes on the front and plain white shorts and stockings, a smart looking combination. When necessary, last season's maroon socks are used away from home to avoid a colour clash.
