Welsh Premier League Cynghrair Bel Droid Cymru 2016 - 2017
Haverfordwest County were relegated to the Welsh Football League after just one season and their place is taken by Cardiff Metropolitan University. Port Talbot Town were also relegated to the same competition, despite finishing 12 points ahead of Rhyl, after they lost their FAW domestic licence, apparently because of financial difficulties. Cefn Druids bounced back after one season in the Huws Gray Alliance. There are now only two teams from South Wales in the competition.

Once again special strips were commissioned for these matches. The change strip for domestic use is updated to the Joma Standard design to match the first choice version.

Bangor have dropped Macron and are now wearing strips by the German manufacturer, Uhlsport. Their new shirt sponsor is linked to Stephen Vaughan who was banned from being a company director and disqualified from the chairmanship of Chester City following his involvement in a VAT fraud in 2009. There is speculation about the extent of Vaughan's involvement with City's new owners after a player and former chief scout from two of the clubs he previously owned arrived over the summer.

Founded in 2000 following the merger of Inter Cardiff and UWIC, the club played as UWIC Inter Cardiff until adopting its present title in 2012. Successive promotions took them from Division Three of the Welsh League to the First Division between 2013 and 2015 and they won the championship last season. This is their first appearance in the Welsh Premier League. Their distinctive, if sombre, colours are maroon and dark blue.

Legea are the Old Gold's new technical sponsors this season. The shade used for the first shirt is quite different to the bright gold offered by Macron and is perhaps a better reflection of the team's nickname. The crest has also received a face lift. The design used for both strips is Legea's Lipsia template.

The red alternative has been updated to the new Adidas design. Both were used in the Europa League but with a different sponsor.

TNS won the double again last season and are confidently expected to win their sixth successive title this time round. Suggestions that the club join the English pyramid have been dismissed by the chairman. He points out that they would lose the income from playing in Europe and suggests that it is up to the other teams in WPL to raise their standards to compete with his team. This season the team played four European matches (bringing in over £1 million), going out in the Second Qualifying Round against APOEL Nicosia.
