2020-2029

scottish football supporters 2019By the beginning of the second decade of the new Millennium, Scottish football was in a bad way. The team that had historically punched well above its weight had not qualified for a major tournament since 1998 and had slipped to 50th in the FIFA rankings. They failed to achieve qualification to the bloated Euro 2020 competition although by winning their group in the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League they were, however, awarded a slot in the play-offs. Penalties were needed to settle both of their matches and at long last Scotland secured a place in the Euro finals.

A survey of Premiership first team squads in 2019-20 reveals the root of Scotland's decline. Of the 300 players registered only 130 (43%) were qualified to play for the national team while just 30% of players contracted to the four leading teams were Scottish. The sheer number of imported players at the top level was choking off the opportunities for young, talented Scots to progress. Indeed, the most talented young players disappeared into the English academy system while the clubs preferred to import foreign players of varying quality to fill out their squads.

The all-dark blue strip was introduced in November 2019 and worn twice. The new alternative in white and aquamarine was launched on March 19 2020, just days before elite football was suspended because of the global Covid-19 pandemic. Scotland were co-hosts with England during the delayed Euro 2020, making their first appearance in a major tournament since 1998 in front of a reduced but emotional crowd at Hampden. Sadly the team took just one point (off England at Wembley) and were eliminated in the group stage.

150th Anniversary

Designer: Adidas

The new offering from Adidas restored white shorts to the first choice kit (although the team could play in all-dark blue when the occasion demanded). The addition of purple trim provided an interesting touch and there was tartan at the cuff and inside the reverse of the collar. The change strip reversed the colours and had a curious fuzzy diamond pattern on the shorts, which I don't think added anything to the overall look of the thing.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the first ever football international, the SFA commissioned a limited edition strip that was "inspired by" rather than modelled on the original. The narrow hoops at the cuffs were a tribute to Queen's Park who provided all the players for that match. The strip was worn by the men's team in the Euro qualifier against Cyprus in March 2023 while the women's team wore it a fortnight later against Costa Rica. It also featured in the one-off "Heritage International" against England in September.

It was back to monocolour outfits in 2024, Adidas and the SFA perhaps having hald an eye on UEFA's requirement for high contrast strips. The first choice strip added large yellow slashes to shirts and shorts, Adidas' main design contribution to Euro 2024. The white trim on the shirt and the blocky graphics printed into the fabric made the first choice strip altogether too busy. The pale blue alternative was more restrained in the use of colour.

Scotland made it to Germany for the Euro finals but finished bottom of their group with just one point.
