1st FIFA World Championship for Women's Football 1991 Group C
Germany's women's team was formed in 1982 and had initially struggled but intensive training in basic skills and an effective youth programme introduced by their chief coach eventually paid off and they won the European Championship in 1989 and 1991. The Italians were considered on a par with the strong Scandinavian sides while Chinese Taipei (representing Taiwan) were something of an unknown quantity and had finished third in the Asian qualifiers. Nigeria had won the 1991 Women's African Football Championship in which eight teams had participated.
