FIFA Women's World Cup 2003 Group B
In the macho cultures of South America women's football struggled but the Brazilian team were head and shoulders above their rivals and had won all four editions of the South American Women's Football Championship. Norway were the Olympic champions in 2000 and had been semi-finalists in the 2001 UEFA Women's Championship. France had finished behind them in the qualifiers and were understandably disappointed to have been drawn with Norway in the finals. South Korea were appearing in the finals for the first time having beaten Japan in the third place play-off of the AFC Women's Championship.
