Technology played a major part in this match. Australia's Josh Risdon was penalised by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for a sliding tackle on Antoine Griezman who converted the resulting penalty. Just four minutes later the Socceroos equalised, also from a penalty, when Umtiti handled the ball in the area, a decision confirmed by the VAR. With ten minutes left Pogba and Behich competed for a ball that bounced into the Australian area and was struck against the underside of the bar. Goalline technology confirmed that the ball had crossed the line and although the goal was originally awarded to Pogba, this was later amended to be an own goal by the unfortunate Aziz Behich.

Peru were made to rue a missed penalty, awarded by the VAR. Although the South American side were the better of the two, Denmark snatched their winner from a counte-attack in the 59th minute. The Danes then defended superbly to secure the points.

Denmark had their early lead wiped out when Yussuf Poulsen was judged to have handled the ball in the penalty area by the VAR. The ball had struck his trailing arm as he contested a high cross with Mathew Leckie and was not seen by the referee. Mile Jedinak converted the penalty.

A first half strike by Kylian Mbappé was enough to secure the points for France. Peru came to life in the second half and were unlucky not to have equalised when Aquino struck the bar. The result means that the South America side were eliminated.

A draw would be enough to see both sides qualify for the knock out stages and that is what they duly delivered. There was little by way of chances or excitement and both teams were booed at the final whistle.

Australia had an outside chance of progressing if they won this match but goals in each half gave Peru their first win in the finals since 1978. Both teams would be on the next flights home.
