If attendances in the group matches (other than those involving the hosts and their neighbours across the River Plate) had been disappointing, the competition now came to life. The extra ferries laid on proved inadequate and as many as 15,000 Argentinians took to whatever craft they could get aboard chanting victoria o muerte (victory or death) for the final.
