Ballaman put the hosts into the lead in the 18th minute but Boniperti equalised just before half-time. With eleven minutes to go Hugi scored again for the Swiss who held on for an excellent result.

Belgium scored first with only five minutes gone and although England recovered to make it 3-1, they threw the match away conceding two late goals. The match then went into extra-time and England were soon ahead again only for Dickinson to head a long free-kick into his own net.
