West Germany demolished Switzerland, a team against which they had several times come unstuck in the past, with a display of ruthless, attacking football.

The German team wore several different versions of their traditional strip throughout the competition, this being the only one with long sleeves.

All three goals came in the last 25 minutes: Artime put Argentina into the lead in the 65th minute, Pirri equalised seven minutes later and then in the 79th minute, Artime scored his second, and Argentina's decisive goal.

Spain made heavy work against the Swiss and found themselves a goal down with less than half an hour played. In the second half, they showed more determination and in the 58th minute their defender, Sanchiz, burst into the Swiss penalty area and drove the ball home. With 15 minutes to go, Gento swung the ball into the centre where Amancio scored with a diving header.

Although the German team were man-for-man bigger and stronger than their opponents, Argentina were determined to match them in a display of strength rather than skill. They tackled with venom and when West Germany looked dangerous, tripped, tugged and wrestled their way back into the game. In the second half, the Argentinian defender Albrecht was sent off for kneeing Weber in the groin. Paradoxically, Argentina played their best football when reduced to ten men.

Switzerland put on a brave show in a match dominated by defenders but in the end, Argentina were just too good for them. Artime opened the scoring, rather against the run of play, in the eighth minute of the second half and Onega made it 2-0 following a prolonged period of pressure eleven minutes from time.

West Germany set out to get a draw but their plans were put in jeopardy when Fuste put Spain ahead in the 24th minute. The Germans abandoned their defensive tactics and surged forward looking for an equaliser, which came in the 38th minute when Emmerich struck a shot from a narrow angle so hard that the ball rebounded off the back of the net and back into play. Spain now went on the attack, looking for a win that was their only chance of going into the next round but in the 82nd minute Seeler calmly trapped a cross that Emmerich had missed and slotted the ball home.
