FIFA World Cup 1994 Group A
The match between the USA and Switzerland was the first World Cup fixture to take place in an indoor stadium. Natural turf, grown by Michigan State University was installed to replace the artificial playing surface specifically for the tournament. Love or hate them, the shirts designed by Adidas for the US team were a radical departure from the standards of the period. The first choice shirt was printed to create the impression of denim.
After the disappointing performance of Colombia, their defender, Andrés Escobar, was shot dead outside a nightclub in Medellin. His murder was widely believed to have been retaliation by gangsters who had lost considerable amount of money gambling on Colombia's results. A bodyguard from a powerful criminal cartel was later convicted of the killing.
