An absorbing game in which both teams were going out for victory was decided in a dramatic nine-minute spell in the second half. James Rodríguez headed in at the near post and six minutes later, Quintero made it 2-0. Almost immediately Gervinho slipped past three defenders to make it 2-1. Cote d'Ivoire pressed for the equaliser but the South American team held on comfortably.

Greece lost their captain, Katsouranis, before the break, sent-off for a second bookable offence. Japan were not able to capitalise on their advantage and the match ended in a stalemate. The result meant that Colombia were through to the next stage.

Japan went behind when Cuadrado scored from the penalty spot mid way through the first half but they drew level moments before half time. Martinez scored twice for Colombia after the break and Rodriguez wrapped it up in the final minutes. At 3-1 up, Colombia brought on their veteran goalkeeper, Faryd Mondragon, who, at 43, became the oldest player ever to have appeared in the finals.
