Cristiano Ronaldo, described by one waggish journalist as a 37 year-old unemployed man, became the first male player to score in five World Cups. Ranked in 61st place, Ghana were one of the weaker teams in the competition. In yet another nail-biting finish South Korea joined Portugal in the next phase while Uruguay went out.

Defences dominated this game to the extent that official FIFA statistics recorded not a single goal attempt was on target (athough Uruguay did hit the woodwork twice).

What was for the most part a dull match was transformed into a thriller after Cristiano Ronaldo (who else) put the Portuguese ahead with a 65th minute penalty. Andre Ayew equalised for Ghana eight minutes later before Sequeira Joao Felix restored Portugal's lead in the 78th minute. Moments later Leao made ot 3-1 but the Black Stars were not done and Osman Bukari made it 3-2 in the 89th minute. Ghana had a golden opportunity to level the scores in the ninth minute of added time when the Portuguese goalkeeper dropped the ball at the feet of Inaki Williams but the Ghanaian forward failed to take advantage.

A real thriller saw South Korea claw back a two goal deficit only to go down to a 68th minute goal from Mohammed Kudus. Ghana led 2-0 at half time but two goals in three minutes from Gue-Sung Cho in the second half brought the scores level. Kudus then scored his second and although the Koreans threw everything into the attack in the closing stages, there was no way back.

Portugal dominated possession although Uruguay had their chances. The first goal came from a free-kick lofted into the Uruguayan area by Fernandez and apparently nodded in by Ronaldo, who certainly claimed it. Replays revealed that he had not touched the ball so the score was credited to Fernandez. In injury time Bruno nutmeged Giminez who fell backwards and the ball struck his hand as he tried to break his fall. After consulting VAR the referee awarded a penalty that Fernandez converted.

Uruguay were counting on Portugal to beat South Korea to ease their path into the knock-out stages and with a 2-0 lead after an an hour of play they were on course. In the 86th minute South Korea took the lead against Portugal which meant that Uruguay needed to score again or go out on goals scored in the time remaining. If Ghana could score twice, they would go through. There followed a frantic eight minutes of end-to-end play and a penalty appeal by Uruguay denied. There was no further score and as the teams left the field furious Uruguayan players pushed and jostled match officials.

With the scores level as full-time approached it looked as if Uruguay would join Portugal in the next round. Then, in the second minute of added time, Korea counter-attacked: Son gathered the ball and ran with it to the Portugese box before releasing an inch-perfect pass to Hwang who slotted the ball into the corner. When the final whistle went the Korean players and officials stood in a circle, glued to their smart phones, as the final six minutes of the Ghana v Uruguay game were played out. When the result from Al Wakrah was confirmed the stadium erupted.
