UEFA Euro 2008 Knock Out Stages

 

uefa euro 2008 logoIn a departure from previous finals, Teams from Groups A and B were kept separate from those from Groups C and D until the final. This meant that sides that had met in the group phase could not meet in the final match. Only the two largest of the eight stadia were used, one in Austria and the other in Switzerland. The Silver Goal rule adopted in 2004 was dropped and single yellow cards received in the group and quarter-finals were wiped out.

In a thrilling climax, Croatia went ahead in the last minute of extra-time only for Turkey to come back from the dead with an equaliser in the second minute of time added on and then prevail in the penalty competition.

Russia took the lead ten minutes into the second half but a late equaliser from van Nistelrooy took the match into extra-time. Torbinski and Arshavin struck twice in the last eight minutes to take Russia through to the semi-finals.

Playing superb passing football, Spain picked away at Italy but were unable to find a way through their strong defence. The Italians, depleted by injuries and suspensions, had to work hard to stay in the game and relied on counter-attacking tactics. In the penalty shoot-out Casillas' two saves allowed Cesc Fàbregas to score the decisive goal that put Spain into the final.

The Turks proved worthy opponents in an exciting match. They took the lead on 22 minutes only for Schweinsteiger to level the scores four minutes later. Klose put Germany in front (79 mins) but Semih Şentürk made it 2-2 with four minutes left. Then, in the final minute of normal time, Philip Lahm scored a dramatic winner that put Germany into their sixth Euro final.

Played in a dramatic thunderstorm that interrupted TV coverage (two of the goals were blacked out), the match demonstrated Spain's superiority. Having beaten Russia 4-1 in the group stages, Spain were firm favourites and took the lead five minutes into the second half. Güiza made it 2-0 (73 mins) and Silva wrapped it up with a late goal.

The final pitted Europe's most successful team against the rising stars. After a bright start, Germany gradually surrendered the initiative and Fernando Torres put Spain into the lead with just over half-an-hour played. After the break Spain dominated and peppered their opponent's goal but although Germany had fewer chances, they put most of those they had on target and an equaliser was always a possibility. In the end, however, Spain won the match 44 years after their only previous European title in 1964.
