euro 24 logo England currently sit in fourth place in the FIFA rankings and under Gareth Southgate they have improved considerably in the eight years he has been in charge. On paper they should qualify for the knock-out stages with some ease given the low rankings of their rivals but it is always dangerous to make such assumptions as even modest sides can raise their game when playing England, which is exactly what happened at Wembley in the warm up match against Iceland this month. Denmark's only loss in the past year was in their last qualifying game against Nothern Ireland in Belfast but they had already qualified for the finals while the Irish team were to far adrift to progress so the fixture was meaningless. Slovenia's recent record is modest but they did beat Portugal in a friendly played in Ljubljana in March, Ronaldo and all. Serbia's record over the last 12 months is played 12, won 5, drawn 2, lost 5.

At Euro 2020, Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch and had to receive CPR. Three years later, at the age of 32, he was back in the team and scored a splendid goal in the 17th minute. For an hour Slovenia seemed overawed but as Denmark failed to capitalise on their opener, they grew in confidence and started counter-attacking vigorously. With 13 minutes to go Janza drove a corner towards the Danish goal. His shot took a deflection, wrong-footing Schmeichel and it was all-square.

Transport chaos forced thousands of fans to trek through pouring rain to get to the match although the stadium was practically full by kick-off. England played with confidence, stroking the ball about and patiently waiting for gaps to appear. Jude Bellingham was outstanding, gliding around the pitch and causing problems wherever he went. His bullet header in the 13th minute gave England the lead. The second-half was a different matter as England dropped deep to keep the very physical Serbs out. Serbia pushed hard while England looked increasingly nervous, and Pickford had to make a finger-tip save in the 82nd minute to keep them at bay.

Slovenia came within seconds of recording their first ever win in the Euros thanks to Karnicik's goal scored in the 69th minute. They looked comfortable in the closing stages while Serbian supporters pelted the pitch with plastic water bottles and cups as well setting off a smoke bomb. Amid the chaos, Serbia launched one final assault that led to a corner in 5th minute of added time. Serbia's goalkeeper joined the attack, as the corner whipped into a thicket of bodies at the near post out of which Luka Jovic rose to power a header into the far corner.

England took the lead in the 18th minute after Kyle Walker stole the ball from Kristiansen, cut inside and hit a low cross that took a couple of deflections before finishing obligingly on Kane's left foot in front of goal. Instead of pressing their advantage, England retreated into their shell again, allowing the Danes to get back into the game. England fell apart: time after time players were caught on the ball, gifted passes to opponents and failed to press when not in possession. In the 34th minute Hjulmund, seeing that no defenders were coming to close him down, had a crack from 25 metres out, sending the ball flying past Pickford. With a midfield that was totally disfunctional, England were fortunate not to have been punished further and were jeered off the pitch by their supporters.

Once again a disappointing England team laboured to create anything against a team ranked 57th in the world. Playing a solid 4-4-2 formation, Slovenia sat back and invited England to attack them. It was soon clear that England could not pass the ball through their defence and lacked pace on the wings to get behind it. Nevertheless, England finished top of the group and are in the easier side of the draw which is probably just as well as here at HFK Towers we dread to think how they will fare when they meet one of the big beasts of the tournament. Slovenia finished level on points and goal difference with Denmark but were assigned to third place because of their slightly worse disciplinary record.

Serbia set out to contain Denmark but their opponents offered very little in the way of attacking threat. A dull, uninspiring game was briefly brought to life early in the second half when Serbia made a rare attack and Jovic got the ball in the net but it was quickly ruled out for offside. The result eliminated Serbia whose beer-throwing supporters will no doubt attract another fine for the Serbian Football Federation to add to those earned in their previous games.
