Group 1 was based in Arica in the far north where the stadium was named to honour Carlos Dittborn, the president of the organising committee who died one month before the tournament began. With the exception of the game between the USSR and Yugoslavia, attendances were below 10,000.

This was a good win for Yugoslavia against a decent Uruguayan team. The match was disfigured in the second half when Ruben Cabrera and Vladimir Popović were sent off for fighting.

Colombia were 4-1 down with 20 minutes left when Marcos Coll's in swinging corner crept in at the near post. The South Americans then poured forward to complete a terrific come back, culminating in a sweeping move through the middle finished off by Klinger four minutes before full-time. Details of the strip worn by Colombia in this match have been confirmed by Efrain Sanchez, who played in goal that day.

Needing only a draw to go into the knock out phase, the Soviet Union were ahead at half-time. Sacia equalised for Uruguay for whom only a win would do and they pressed forward for the second goal they needed. Ivanov scored in the final minute to end the South American's hopes.
