England lost Banks before the game to food poisoning, but Bonetti was a more than able deputy. England took a 2-0 lead; Mullery starting and finishing a move for the first, Peters scoring the second just after half-time. Beckenbauer pulled one back with a shot that went under Bonetti's dive. Ramsey substituted Bobby Charlton to strengthen the defence, but his influence in midfield was sorely missed. Seeler equalised with a back-header with eight minutes left, and Müller volleyed in the winner in extra time. Hurst had an equaliser mysteriously disallowed. Newton, Labone, Bonetti and Charlton did not play for England again. Prime Minister Harold Wilson blamed his election defeat on this result.

This eagerly awaited meeting of two South American teams committed to all-out attack produced plenty of excitement. Brazil were 2-0 up after 15 minutes with goals from Rivelino and Tostão, and from then on Peru were chasing the game. Gallardo pulled on back after 28 minutes, but in the second half Tostão restored Brazil's two-goal lead. Cubillas made it 3-2 in the 70th minute only for Jairzinho to score Brazil's fourth five minutes later. The two coaches, Zagallo and Didi, had played on the winning teams in the 1958 and 1962 Finals.

Mexico scored first through González, but their advantage was cancelled 12 minutes later when Guzmán put through his own goal. In the second half, Rivera's arrival from the bench (again) transformed the Italians from the dour, defensive team seen in the group games, into a cohesive attacking unit. Their powerful striker, Luigi Riva scored twice, and Rivera showing what an elegant midfield play maker he could be, also got on the score sheet, as if to prove a point.

In a closely contested match, which was dull and dirty – over 70 fouls were committed – Uruguay prevailed thanks to a late goal by Victor Espárrago (Spanish for 'asparagus') five minutes from the end of extra time. The Russians complained long and hard that the ball has gone out of play immediately before the cross to Espárrago, but TV replays show conclusively that it had not.

Not for the first time, Brazil conceded first, Cubillas scoring for Uruguay in the 19th minute. Clodoaldo equalised just before half-time but the match continued to be an even contest up until the final twenty minutes when Brazil's attack proved too strong. The match is remembered for an incident in which Pelé rushed through towards the Uruguayan goalkeeper at full tilt, allowing the ball to roll past Mazurkiewicz on the left while he ran round him on the right and then catching the ball on the run but his shot slid just wide. The 'ghost of 1950' had been well and truly laid to rest.

Christened "The Game of the Century," a monument was later erected in the Azteca Stadium to commemorate this remarkable match. Boninsegna put Italy ahead in the eighth minute and from then on West Germany attacked relentlessly and Schnellinger equalised in injury time – his only goal in 47 appearances for Die Mannschaft. Four minutes into extra time Müller put West Germany ahead; Burgnich levelled the scores minutes later and then Riva put Italy back in the lead. Müller then scored again in the 110th minute to level the scores, but while his goal was being replayed on TV, Rivera slotted the ball past Maier and put Italy into the final. Earlier, Beckenbauer fractured his clavicle after being fouled, but stayed on the field, wearing a sling, as his side had already used their two permitted substitutions.

Despite the low key occasion, over 100,000 people turned out. Uruguay finally played some attacking football and could have scored three or four; but, as we would come to see in later competitions, West Germany simply soaked up the pressure and then went on to win, Overath scoring the only goal in the 26th minute. This was the only game in the competition, including six qualifiers, in which Müller failed to score.

The Final provided a perfect climax to an excellent tournament. Brazil scored first – their 100th goal in World Cup tournaments – but Boninsegna equalised after familiar blunders by Brazil's defence. Unperturbed, Brazil simply renewed their attacking and overwhelmed a tiring Italian side. Their fourth goal is considered one of the best ever scored and typified Brazil's approach to "The Beautiful Game." Tostão started the move from the edge of Brazil's penalty area then ran up the length of the pitch: Clodoaldo beat four Italian players before passing to Rivelino who sent a perfect ball to Jairzinho on the left wing. Jairzinho cut inside and laid the ball off for Pelé who held it up 12 yards outside the Italian penalty area before sliding a diagonal pass into the path of Carlos Alberto, arriving like an express train down the right, who crashed the ball first time past Albertosi.
