FIFA World Cup 1986 Knock Out Stages

fifa world cup 1986 posterThe introduction of knock out rounds immediately after the initial group stage increased the drama considerably compared to the 1982 tournament. There would now be no second chances for teams and no point in playing for a draw.

There were several dramatic games, not least being the match between Argentina and England in which Maradona scored the notorious "Hand of God" goal. Bobby Robson later stated his team had been beaten by the "hand of a rascal" but for Argentinian fans, this was revenge for the unjust treatment they believed their team had received in 1966. Maradona emerged as the world's greatest player and was awarded the Golden Ball award as the player of the tournament.

Argentina wore cotton shirts which players found uncomfortable in the heat so a member of the coaching staff was sent out to buy a set of lighter polyester tops for the quarter final match against England.

Brazil dominated the early stages and took the lead in the 18th minute but five minutes before the break, Michel Platini equalised. In the second half Zico had the chance to put Brazil ahead again but his penalty was saved by Bats while Sócrates missed a couple of sitters. France were the better team in extra time but failed to score so the match went to penalties. Sócrates missed with Brazil's first kick: the next six were converted before Platini missed to level the score. Julio Cesar then hit the post leaving Luis Fernández to score the decisive kick.

England

Argentina 2 England 1

Estadio Azteca, Mexico City (114,580)
22 June 1986

The intense rivalry between Argentina and England had a new edge in this first meeting since the Falklands War in 1982. Argentina had most of the early possession but could not penetrate England's defence. Six minutes after the break, Diego Maradona used his left hand to knock a high ball past Shilton. This became known as the Hand of God goal after a remark by Maradona afterwards. Four minutes later, Maradona wove his way through the entire English defence to score what would later be voted the Goal of the Century. Lineker scored in the 80th minute (he won the Golden Boot as the competition's leading scorer) as England pressed hard but they ran out of time.

Argentina's shirts had been hurriedly bought in Mexico City and an older version of the AFA crest sewn in.

With an hour played, Argentina were 2-0 up and seemed to be cruising to victory but West Germany mounted a characteristic come back and with ten minutes to go, they were level. Maradona had been closely marked throughout but he still made several important contributions, not least of which was the pass that allowed Jorge Burruchaga to score the winning goal in the 84th minute.
