FIFA World Cup 1986 Knock Out Stages
The introduction of knock out rounds immediately after the initial group stage increased the drama considerably compared to the 1982 tournament. There would now be no second chances for teams and no point in playing for a draw.
There were several dramatic games, not least being the match between Argentina and England in which Maradona scored the notorious "Hand of God" goal. Bobby Robson later stated his team had been beaten by the "hand of a rascal" but for Argentinian fans, this was revenge for the unjust treatment they believed their team had received in 1966. Maradona emerged as the world's greatest player and was awarded the Golden Ball award as the player of the tournament.
