FIFA World Cup 1982
The 1982 tournament was expanded to 24 teams allowing more African and Asian nations to take part. A unique format was developed: in the first round the teams were drawn into six groups of four and played each other in the usual round robin. The top two sides from each group moved on to the second round which consisted of four groups of three and the winners of each group then contested a knock out stage. A record 17 stadia in 14 cities were used to stage the matches.
