Scotland built up 3-0 lead by half-time but in the second half New Zealand came back to make it 3-2. Robertson and Archibald scored in the 73rd and 76th minutes to remove the danger.

David Narey put Scotland into the lead in the 18th minute which they held until just over an hour had been played and Zico equalised. Oscar, Éder and Falcão scored in the second half when Brazil outplayed the Scots.

With quarter of an hour played, a massive clearance and a defensive error allowed Joe Jordan in to put Scotland into the lead. Chivadze equalised on the hour. In the 84th minute two Scottish players got in each others way and failed to clear a speculative long ball to let Shengelia through on the left and he rounded the Scottish 'keeper before slotting the ball home. Three minutes later Graeme Souness beat two defenders before placing the ball inside the post from the edge of the area. The Soviets held on as Scotland mounted a last, desperate assault.
