fifa world cup 1982 poster After years of underachievement in the European Championships as well as the World Cup, Spain were strongly fancied to win the competition on their home territory but they only just squeaked through to the Second Round. Northern Ireland, managed by Billy Bingham who had been a member of the squad when they qualified for the finals in 1958, were the surprise package and finished on top of the group.

Yugoslavia took an early lead and once again, Spain needed a penalty to draw level, an award that enraged the Yugoslav players as the offence clearly took place outside the penalty area. They were even more angry when the referee allowed Spain to take the kick again after they missed with the first attempt. In the second half, Saura scored for Spain rather against the run of play.
