FIFA World Cup 1982 Second Round
The second round of matches were played in Barcelona and Madrid. Poland qualified from Group A for the semi-finals on goal difference while the other groups all produced clear winners. The Italian team showed their attacking ability after their disappointing form in the first group round and met the holders, Argentina and Brazil in Group C.

Both teams had three points but the Poles had a superior goal difference going into the game. Poland defended their advantage to qualify for the semi-finals.

Neither side was able to break through although Robson came close for England and Rummenigge hit the bar and the match fizzled out into a draw. England's red shirts were slightly different to those worn against France. Admiral had hastily made up Aertex shirts after the players complained that the polyester ones wor in the opening match were too hot. The new tops had the polyester yokes sewn on with a white border at the bottom.

Littbarski and Fischer broke Spanish hearts and although Zamora gave the hosts a glimmer of hope with a goal in the 82nd minute, Spain were out.

England needed to improve on West Germany's result against Spain to qualify for the knock out stage but in the event neither side could find a goal so both were now eliminated.

After a goalless first half, Tardelli ended a sweeping move with a goal in the 55th minute. Carbrini scored Italy's second after another fast attack. Argentina's captain, Passarrela scored for Argentina with an astonishing free kick in the 83rd minute.

Brazil stamped their authority on the match with three goals. Once again, Argentina's goal came too late to make a difference.

The match pitched Brazil's impressive attack against Italy's solid defence and was largely played in the Italian half. Paolo Rossi put l'Azzuri ahead in the fifth minute but Sócrates equalised seven minutes later. Rossi scored again in the 25th minute and his team then defended their lead for 43 minutes before Falcão made it 2-2. Then, with 16 minutes to go, Rossi scored his third and this time his defence kept Brazil out until the final whistle.

Billy Hamilton scored for Northern Ireland in the 27th minute. Austria bounced back in the second half to take the lead but with fifteen minutes left, Hamilton struck again.
