The group ended in a scandalous match that attracted considerable criticism, a formal protest by the Algerian Football Federation and led directly to FIFA changing the rules so that the final round of group games would be played simultaneously in the future.

Rabah Madjer gave Algeria a surprise lead nine minutes into the second half. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge equalised in the 67th minute but, completely out of the blue, Algeria went ahead again within a minute thanks to Lakhdar Belloumi. Algeria held on to secure an historic win.

At half-time the Algerians changed into fresh shirts of a different design.

The game was played the day after Algeria's win over Chile so both teams knew exactly what they needed to do. A draw or a win by Austria would eliminate West Germany while a German win by more than two goals would knock Austria out. After ten minutes of all-out attack, West Germany scored and for the next 80 minutes, the teams knocked the ball about and made no further attempt to score. Enraged Algerian supporters waved banknotes while the Spanish in the crowd chanted "Fuera, fuera" (out, out).
