Spain stormed through the group, finishing unbeaten in first place. Paraguay and South Africa tied in second place, equal on points and on goal difference. The South Americans progressed by virtue of having scored one more goal than Bafana Bafana.

Santa Cruz gave Paraguay the lead six minutes before half-time and ten minutes after the interval, Arce added another, which seemed to make the game safe. Midway through the second half, however, they began to wobble after Struway scored an own goal and in a dramatic climax, the aptly named Quinton Fortune equalised with a penalty in injury time.

Spain made heavy weather of beating Slovenia, making their first appearance in the World Cup finals. Raúl scored Spain's first just before half-time and Valerón doubled the lead in the 74th minute. Eight minutes from the end, Sebastjan Cimirotič pulled one back for Slovenia and Spain looked nervous until they were awarded a dubious late penalty which Hierro converted.

A freakish own goal by Puyol handed the lead to Paraguay in the 10th minute after which the South Americans packed their defence. Spain looked ineffective at least until the second half when they began to assert themselves. Morientes levelled the score in the 53rd minute and put Spain ahead a quarter of an hour later. The game opened up as Paraguay turned to the attack but Hierro sealed the Spanish win with a late penalty.

A poor game was decided by a fourth minute goal from Siyabonga Nomvethe who mistimed his header only for the ball to cannon off his thigh and into the net.

In an enthralling game, South Africa twice came back to level the score but when Raúl restored Spain's lead with his second goal of the match scored in the 56th minute, his team were able to hold out against determined South African pressure until the final whistle.
