FIFA World Cup 2002 Knock Out Stages
To avoid excessive travelling during the knock-out phase the qualifiers from Groups A, C, F and H were based in Japan while those from Groups B, D, E and G played in South Korea. The Golden Goal rule was in effect and if there was no scoring in extra time the match was decided by a penalty competition.
South Korea had a memorable tournament as did Turkey, appearing in their first finals since 1954 and the two teams contested the third place play-off while the two strongest teams from Europe and South America, Germany and a resurgent Brazil respectively, met in the final.
