Germany were 2-0 up at half-time but after the break the Swedes fought back and with ten minutes remaining Sundhage levelled the scores. Six minutes later, Andersson rifled the ball home from close range after the German goalkeeper failed to clear a corner.

Brazil came from being a goal down to equalise (Roseli 19') but any hopes they had of getting a result soon evaporated. Meinert restored the German lead three minutes later and Wiegman scored from the penalty spot just before half-time. Germany's superior fitness became evident in the final 12 minutes when they scored three more.
