Hege Riise opened the scoring for Norway in the 37th minute, beating two defenders as she carried the ball to the edge of the German penalty area before precisely placing her shot into the far corner of the goal. The second goal, scored by Pettersen from close range after the Germans lost possession atempting to play out of defence, proved decisive. It is claimed that 25% of the population of Norway watched the game on TV. The team's flight home was escorted by two Norwegian Airforce F-16s.
