France (seeded ahead of England) and England were the highest ranked teams in Group F and both qualified for the knock out stages as did Colombia, the runners up in the Copa América Femenina. Mexico, who arrived in Canada after taking third place in the CONCACAF Women's Championship took the flight home. All four contestants had appeared in previous tournaments.

The wonderfully named Lady Andrade raced clear to score in the 19th minute. The French pressed for the rest of the game but Las Cafeteras (the Coffee Growers - not patronising at all that) held on and in injury time Usme added a second.

Substitute Karen Carney made the game safe in the 82nd minute. An error by Bardley in England's goal allowed Mexico to score in injury time but it made no difference to the result.
