A great deal was expected of Portugal as hosts: their team had demonstrated their class and talent in previous tournaments and were among the tournament favourites. The rank outsiders, Greece, however, spoiled the party in their opening match and went on to scrape into the next round for the first time in their history.

The hosts suffered an unexpected setback in their opening match, Giorgios Karagounis giving Greece the lead in the seventh minute. The Greeks played with confidence while Portugal, perhaps overcome with nerves, gave away possession too easily and six minutes into the second half, they went further behind after Ronaldo gave away a penalty. The Portuguese tried to get back into the game but there was rarely anyone in position to finish off their moves, although Ronaldo did score a consolation goal three minutes into injury time.

An hour into the game Juan Carlos Valerón, who had just come on as a substitute, put away what proved to be the winner. Spain dominated for most of the match.
