Euro 2004 Group C

euro 2004 logoSweden, Denmark and Italy finished level with five points each and drew all their matches against each other so could not be separated by points won or goal difference accrued in the matches involving the three (the results against Bulgaria were disregarded under the rather complicated tie-break criteria). Positions were decided by goals scored in matches between the tied teams putting Sweden (3 goals) and Denmark (2) through while Italy were eliminated with 1 goal. Curiously if the old system of separating teams through goal difference in all group matches had been used the result would have been the same.

Jon Dahl Tomasson put Denmark ahead just before half-time from a quick break up field after an evenly contested first 45 minutes. In the second half Bulgaria tried their best to get back into the match but their hopes were effectively ended when their captain, Petrov, was sent off seven minutes from time. Jesper Grønkjær scored Denmark's second in injury time.

Bulgaria took the lead from a penalty on the stroke of half-time. Perrotta leveled the scores three minutes after the restart but Italy's winner did not come until deep into injury timeL: by this time news of Sweden's equaliser in Porto had come through which meant that Italy would eliminated on their head-to-head record against Denmark and Sweden regardless of the result.

Denmark 2 Sweden 2

Estádio do Bessa, Porto (26,115)
22 June 2004

Denmark took the lead twice in difficult conditions, a heavy drizzle and strong winds making it hard for players to keep their feet and control the ball. The Danes were leading 2-1 as full-time approached, a result that would have put them through with Italy but then Jon Dahl Tomasson scored and Sweden were through.
