No fewer than 27 goals were scored in the six Group 2 matches (an average of 4.5 per game), ten of them in the opening game between France and Paraguay. France and Yugoslavia finished top with four points each and France were placed first because of their superior goal average.

The first half was closely fought, Paraguay taking the lead in the 21st minute only for France to come back with two goals and then, a minute before half-time, Amarilla scored his second from the penalty spot to make it 2-2 at half-time. Five minutes into the second half, Paraguay were back in the lead but were then overwhelmed by a remarkable French come back which saw them score four without reply. France's star, Just Fontaine scored a hat-trick.

Scotland came from behind after trailing for most of the first half before Jimmy Murray equalised in the 49th minute.

Fontaine put France ahead in the fourth minute but Petakovic cancelled it out twelve minutes later. In the second period, Yugoslavia took the lead but with five minutes left, Fontaine equalised for France to set up an exciting finish. Two minutes before the final whistle, Veselinović scored his second of the match to give Yugoslavia the two points.

After Paraguay's drubbing at the hands of France, Scotland were full of expectation but they suffered an early blow, going behind after four minutes. Mudie equalised mid way through the first half but Re restored the South American's lead just before half-time. Parodi made it 3-1 after 75 minutes and although Collins hit back for Scotland immediately, his team looked ragged in the closing stages.

Defensive errors and missed chances cost Scotland any chance of a victory against France. The defeat meant they were eliminated.
Paraguay

In a remarkable three minute spell in the fist half, Yugoslavia took the lead, conceded the equaliser and then went ahead once more. Agüero leveled the scores again in the 52nd minute before Rajkov restored Yugoslavia's lead after 73 minutes. Paraguay came back for the third time to equalise with ten minutes left. The result put Yugoslavia through with the same number of points as France.
