FIFA World Cup 1990 Group A
The Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia had take place the previous year and the old communist badge was replaced on the team's shirt by the nation's flag. There was no professional league in the United States at this time so reaching the finals was a considerable achievement for a team made up mostly of college players. Italy finished their group games with a 100% record and were one of the leading favourites to win the tournament on their home territory.
