FIFA World Cup 1990 Group D
Colombia, playing in the finals for the first time since 1962, fielded a flamboyant side that featured René "El Loco" Higuita in goal and the supremely talented Carlos Valderrama, whose huge blonde afro made him one of the most recognisable players on the planet. The United Arab Emirates (known as Al Abyad - the Sand Monkeys) made their debut but were no match for the other teams in the group. West Germany, coached by Franz Beckenbauer and with Rudi Völler, Jürgen Klinsmann and Lothar Matthäus in their side were among the favourites to win the competition.
