FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 Group C

Brazil have produced some wonderful players and have made a real impact on the world stage but their potential has been held back by the indifference of the Brazilian public and their governing body, the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol. Australia have improved since they changed confederations in 2006 and the women's team has gradually gained greater recognition. Italy are unbeaten this year and could spring some surprises while Jamaica may be happy just to score.

Two goals from Bonansea produced the first shock result of the competition as the Italians came from behind. Italy twice took the lead only to be denied by the VAR and the match seemed destined to be a draw until Banansea nodded into the net in the fifth minute of injury time.

With almost 20 minutes gone Australia were denied a penalty after the VAR review revealed a handball in the build up. Moments later the referee judged Kellond-Knight to have pushed Santos in the box and Marta scored from the penalty spot. As the intensity rose, Tamires nutmegged Gielnik, found Debinha whose cross was met by Cristiane and it was 2-0. In injury time Foord bustled the ball home to give the Matildas a life-line. In the 58th minute Logarzo launched the ball into the box for Kerr who failed to make contact but whose presence distracted Bárbara enough for the ball to bounce into the net and it was 2-2. Eight minutes later Carpenter launched a long ball forward for Kerr who was in an offside position and the ball wound up in the net. The VAR review revealed it had come off the Brazilian defender, Monica. Controversially Kerr was judged not to have been interfering with play and the goal was awarded.

Sam Kerr scored all four of the Matildas' goals as she took her team into the knock out phase single handed. There was a scare late in the game when Brazil scored against Italy to push Australia into third place but when Kerr scored her fourth in the 83rd minute their advantage was restored by virtue of having beaten Brazil in their previous match.

With the scores still at 0-0, Debinha was brought down in the area by Linari and Marta (who else?) slotted the penalty home. In the end Italy topped the group on goal difference and they, Brazil and Australia all finished with six points.
