On paper the Canadian team are the strongest in Group E. The Netherlands, European champions with a current FIFA ranking of ninth are expected to join them in the next round but nothing should be taken for granted.

Billed as a mismatch, the game turned out to be anything but. As expected the Netherlands dominated but New Zealand had good chances on the counter atack and hit the bar in the first half. As full-time approached, the Dutch pressed harder than ever, keeping their opponents penned in their own penalty area for minutes at a time. In the second minute of added time, a looping cross to the far post was headed back across the goal where Jill Roord pounced.

Vivianne Miedema but the Dutch ahead in the 41st minute but Cameroon equalised almost immediately (Onguene 43'). The Netherlands went ahead again after the break (Bloodworth 48') and with five minutes to go Miedama scored again.

Canada progressed to the last 16 with second-half goals scored by Fleming (48') and Prince (79').

Netherlands secured the top place in Group E with a goal from Beerensteyn 15 minutes from the end. The match was closely contested but there was little at stake as both teams were already through to the next phase. There was controversy in the opening minutes when Canada were awarded a penalty but as Christine Sinclair prepared to take the kick a belated VAR review led to a free-kick being awarded outside the area.

Njoya Ajara Nchout put Cameroon into the lead in the 57th minute but her goal was cancelled out in the 80th minute by Aurele Awona's own goal. New Zealand were now pressing for a winner but with the last kick of the game, Nchout scored the winner in the fifth minute of added time to earn Cameroon a place in the knock out stages.
