euro 2016 logo After a disappointing World Cup, Spain qualified comfortably and are seeking to win the Euros for a record third time in succession.

The Croatian Football Federation has been beset by problems of late. Their vice-president, Zdravko Mamić, faces charges of embezzling money from Dinamo Zagreb when he was chief executive there and his chief executive has been charged as an accomplice. Many supporters believe the pair have hijacked the federation and turned it into a corrupt vehicle for making money. Furthermore racist incidents during qualifying led UEFA to order their match with Italy to be played behind closed doors. In Saint-Étienne a group of supporters staged an attack on their compatriots prompting another UEFA investigation.

With an hour played Croatia were 2-0 up and cruising to victory. Even when Škoda pulled one back in the 76th minute, it seemed unlikely that they would get anything from the game. At that point the Croatian supporters intervened: fifteen flares were thrown onto the pitch, the signal for a small faction to attack their compatriots. Play was suspended for several minutes and a threat to abandon the match was issued. When order was restored the Croatian team had lost their composure and in the 94th minute Vida needlessly handled in the box. Tomáš Necid converted the penalty to earn the Czechs a barely deserved point.

Turkey were outclassed by Spain who looked very good indeed. Álvaro Morata scored twice and Manuel Agudo Nolito once to book Spain's place in the next phase.

Spain opened the scoring in the seventh minute but Kalinic equalised immediately before half time. In the 87th minute a Spanish attack broke down on the edge of Croatia's penalty area: Croatia raced up the pitch. Perisic, galloping up the left flank cut inside and shot diagonally, the ball taking a slight deflection before embarrassing de Gea, beaten at his near post.
