Euros 2016 Knock Out Stages
The problem with the 24-team format is that the four third placed teams with the best records (based, in priority order, on points, goal difference, goals scored, fair play conduct and ultimately their coefficient ranking) go into the knock-out phase but their rankings cannot be determined until the last group games have been completed. This creates considerable uncertainty and means the teams who play last (i.e. Group F) know exactly what result they need to progress.
As it turned out, the competition's strongest teams, Germany, Italy, Spain and France finished up on the same side of the draw ensuring that three would be eliminated before the final.
