Euros 2016 Group E
The Republic of Ireland won their place in the finals after negotiating the play-offs as did Sweden. Ranked second in the world, Belgium were much fancied and started out as favourites in this group. Italy on the other hand had attracted a lot of criticism at home in the preceding months so no change there.

Ireland deserved to be ahead (Hoolahan 47") but once they were, the team seemed unsure what to do. Sweden came back into the game and it was no surprise that they equalised, Clark heading into his own net trying to deal with a fast cross with Larsson immediately behind him.

Belgium were disappointing whereas Italy looked sound in defence and dangerous going forward. In the end they won the game in the classic Italian manner, Giaccherini having scored with half an hour played. The Azzuri controlled the match from there on in and when they dismantled the Belgian defence in the second minute of injury time for Graziano Pellè to volley home, it was no more than they deserved.

This was a victory for Italy in the traditional manner. There was very little to cheer about (Italy had just four attempts on goal, Sweden two, neither of which were on target) and then in the 88th minute Citadin Éder scored a stunning goal that guaranteed a place in the next round.

Ireland were outplayed and finished off by three second half goals. Their only hope of progress now is that
Italy field a weakened team in their final group game and the Irish can snatch a win.
