Euros 2016 Group F

euro 2016 logoAgainst all expectation, Iceland are making their first appearance in a tournament final stage after finishing as runners up in their qualifying group. Their achievement included two wins against the Netherlands. Around 30,000 Icelanders travelled to France, that's 10% of the entire population. They were well rewarded.

Dark horses Austria slumped to defeat against a lively Hungarian side. Adam Szalai put the Magyars ahead with an hour played: minutes later Austria's Dragavic was given a second yellow card. With no alternative but to attack, Austria were caught out by a fast Hungarian counter-attack and conceded a second.

As expected, Portugal were dominant and it was no surprise when Luis Nani put them in the lead after half and hour. The Icelanders were not put off their stride, however, and continued to defend with determination while their opponents looked disjointed. Five minutes after the restart Iceland had a rare foray forward: Guðmundsson was given too much space and he whipped the ball across to Birkir Bjarnason who slipped his marker and stroked the ball home from seven yards.

Iceland came agonisingly close to securing an historic win but as so often in this tournament, a late goal changed the game. Swansea City's Sigurðsson had scored from the penalty spot six minutes before half-time. After the break, the Icelander's defended with great determination, keeping their 4-4-2 shape despite constant pressure from the Hungarians. They just had to hold out for a few more minutes when Nikolic sent the ball across the six-yard box and Saevarsson, with a Hungarian striker at his shoulder, slid to intercept but could only turn the ball into his own goal.

Ronaldo had a nightmare, missing several great chances and hitting the upright from a penalty in the 80th minute after sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. This result leaves Portugal needing a result in their final match if they are to progress.

Iceland took the lead in the first half (Böðvarsson 18'): Austria were awarded a penalty moments later but Dragović hit the post. They did level the score on the hour and then threw everything they had at Iceland in search of a winner. In the third minute of injury time launched a text book counter attack and Arnór Ingvi Traustason scored an historic winner.

A thrilling game saw both teams progress. Hungary scored first but Nani equalised three minutes before half time. The match exploded after the break: Dzsudzsak scored in the 47th and 55th minutes but Cristiano Ronaldo, finally showing his class, equalised on both occasions.
