Italy won Group B but going into the final round of games, all of the teams were in with a shout of qualifying for the next round. Despite conceding equalisers in all of their matches, Chile's three draws were in the end enough to take them through.

Vieri's opening goal for Italy in the tenth minute was a genuine route one effort. Salas equalised on the stroke of half time and four minutes after the break, he put Chile into the lead. Roberto Baggio atoned for his penalty miss in the 1994 final by scoring from the slot with five minutes to go.

Di Baggio put Italy ahead in the seventh minute and the match remained finely balanced until Vieri doubled the Italian lead in the 75th minute. He scored again with a minute to go.

In an extraordinary turn of events, Austria once again scored in injury time (Herzog from a penalty) but this time it was not enough. Vieri had put Italy 1-0 up early in the second half and in the 89th minute, Roberto Baggio scored Italy's vital second goal.
