FIFA World Cup 1998 Group F
Germany were, as usual, among the favourites and were joined by Yugoslavia, returning to the international fold after a ban imposed during the Yugoslav Civil Wars. The team was now drawn only from Serbia and Montenegro, the other republics that made up the former Yugoslav Republic having joined FIFA in their own right. The group also brought together the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran in a match carrying considerable political freight. To their credit, the two national associations sought to defuse this by having the teams photographed together in the pre-match build up.
