FIFA World Cup 1998 Group C
South Africa, readmitted to FIFA in 1992 after the end of apartheid, made their World Cup debut and were joined in Group C by the Asian Football Confederation qualifiers, Saudi Arabia, who had reached the finals for the first time in 1994. They were up against the hosts and a very strong Danish team and proved they were no pushovers. France, whose multi-racial team (known as Black, Blanc, Beur*) was held up as a model of French social integration (and attracted criticism from the far right as a result) finished with maximum points.
* A colloquial term for French born men of Arab descent.
