FIFA World Cup 2006 Group C

Côte d'Ivoire made their first World Cup finals appearance while Serbia & Montenegro had competed in the 1998 tournament as Yugoslavia. Their defeat against Côte d'Ivoire in their final group match was the last fixture played by the team because Montenegro had formally declared its independence a week earlier.

in the opening minutes, Côte d'Ivoire took the game to their opponents but were let down by poor finishing. Argentina gradually took control and went ahead in the 24th minute, Crespo scoring from close range. Saviola added a second (38'). Argentina sat back after the interval and tried to hit the African team on the break and with eight minutes to go, they conceded to set up a nervous finale.

The Dutch took control of the game in the first half, Van Persie and then Van Nistelrooy scoring in the 23rd and 27th minute. Côte d'Ivoire hit back unexpectedly six minutes before haf-time and after the interval the game flowed from one end to the other.

Nikola Žigić and Saša Ilić had put Serbia & Montenegro 2-0 up by the 20th minute. The African side mounted a spirited come back, Aruna Dindane converting a penalty (37') and then scored the equaliser (67'). With four minutes to go, Côte d'Ivoire were awarded another penalty which Bonaventure Kalu converted.
