FIFA World Cup 2006 Knock Out Stages

fifa world cup 2006 posterSeveral records were set in the knock out phase. David Beckham became the first England player to score in three World Cups, while Valentin Ivanov issued a record number of yellow and red cards in the "Battle of Nuremburg." Switzerland became the first team in the history of the World Cup to be eliminated without conceding a goal and the first to fail to score in a penalty competition.

The most important record was set by Brazil's Ronaldo who became the highest scorer in the history of the World Cup finals with his 15th goal against Ghana, beating the previous record set by Gerd Müller in 1974.

A lacklustre performance in stifling heat was enlivened by a fine goals from David Beckham from 30 yards with an hour played. Beckham had to go off in the final minutes after being taken ill due to heat exhaustion and dehydration but he had done enough to steer England to victory. And not for the first time.

Australia came within a kangaroo's whisker of taking ten man Italy into extra time. They had defended resolutely throughout and if Materazzi's dismissal for a foul on Marco Bresciano was harsh, Italy had squandered too many chances to complain. Without the injured Kewell, Australia lacked the finishing power to take advantage of their numerical superiority. The drama came in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Italy were awarded a penalty. With the last kick of the game Totti kept his nerve a slotted the ball into the net.

Ronaldo's fifth minute strike set a new World Cup record and put Brazil on the way to a comfotable win. They were, however, flattered by the final scoreline. For long spells Ghana matched Brazil and had several good chances but they were undone by some naive defending.

FIFA WM Stadion, Hannover (43,000)

Spain went ahead in the first half from a penalty scored by David Villa but once again they failed to live up to their potential, crumpling under pressure. Franck Ribéry levelled the score shortly before half time. France played a direct game trying to take advantage of Thierry Henry's speed while Spain played a patient passing game but in the final stages it was France who stepped up a gear. With seven minutes to go, Vieira headed home a deflected free kick and in injury time Zinedine Zidane fired home France's third.

Slack marking in Germany's usually cast iron defence allowed Roberto Ayala to head home from a corner four minutes into the second half after a cautious first period. With ten minutes left in normal time, Miroslav Klose rescued Germany with a headed goal. In extra time both sides were exhausted and played at walking pace having already used their substitutes and chances werer limited to long range efforts so the match went to penalties. England's prospects suffered a setback after their captain, David Beckham had to go off injured just after half-time and Wayne Rooney was sent off after aiming a stamp at an opponent in full view of the referee. Urged on by a large English support, the team fought a resolute rearguard action in stifling heat but neither side could score. germany 2006 world cup

Germany

Italy 2 Germany 0 (after extra time)

FIFA WM Stadion Dortmund (65,000)
4 July 2006

Although there was no score after 90 minutes, the match had been an absorbing one. It really came to life, however, in extra time. No doubt aware of Germany's record in penalty shoot-outs, the Italians began to attack with serious intent and twice hit the woodwork. Both sides had good chances but with one minute left, penalties seemed inevitable. Then, as Italy pushed forward in numbers, Pirio found Grosso with a precise pass and the midfielder fired the ball past Lehman. Germany pressed forward in desperation leaving themselves vulnerable at the back and when Gilardino picked up the ball in space in stoppage time, he rolled it forward to Del Piero who finished clinically.

France's talisman, Zinedine Zidane, slotted home the penalty in the 33rd minute that was the only goal of the game. France were in control while Portugal were disappointing. In the second half the play became disjointed and scrappy, which suited the French perfectly and they never really looked like losing their grip.

Gottlieb Daimler Stadion, Stuttgart (52,000)
8 July 2006

Determined to salvage something after their dramatic semi-final defeat, Germany started positively while Portugal played with greater freedom than in previous matches but the first half soon descended into a dull affair that had Michael Ballack yawning on the bench. Germany picked things up after the break, Schweinsteiger scoring with a fierce drive from range. Five minutes later the midfielder drove in a low free-kick that cannoned off Petit and into the net and he finished things off with another drive from the edge of the box in the 78th minute.

Zidane gave France an early lead, coolly chipping a penalty but in the 19th minute Materazzi leveled the score. Both sides attacked and the game could have gone either way but in extra-time, France started to dominate. With ten minutes to go, Zidane in his last game before he retired, became involved in an altercation with Materazzi and head butted the Italian in the chest and was duly sent off. Although shocked, France held on but in the penalty competition, Trezeguet's miss proved decisive.
