A mistake by Tomáš Ujfaluši let Asamoah Gyan in to score for Ghana after just 70 seconds. In the second half Ujfaluši was sent off but Gyan hit the post with the resulting penalty. Ghana were dominant and only a fine performance by Petr Čech kept the score down but therebwas nothing he could do to stop Muntari scoring Ghana's second eight minutes from time.

Gilardino put Italy ahead in the 22nd minute but five minutes later, the united States were back on level terms when Zaccardo sliced a clearance into his own goal. Seconds later De Rossi was dismissed for elbowing McBride in the face. Pablo Mastroeni of the United States received his marching orders on the stroke of half-time for a reckless challenge and was joined by Pope in the dressing room two minutes after the break. The USA held out with nine men against Italy's ten and counterattacked when they could and in the end were well satisfied with the result.
