FIFA World Cup 2006 Group G
Thanks to their solid defence, Switzerland finished top of the group without conceding a goal while France finished in second place. Togo were in the World Cup finals for the first time but failed to make much of an impression.

The high point of a dull first half was a strike by Mohamed Kader that put Togo ahead. South Korea took a while to get into the game and were helped when Abalo was sent off in the 53rd minute. Lee Chun-Soo then equalised from the free kick. In the 72nd minute Ahn Jung-Hwan fired home the winner from the edge of the box.

Neither team seemed willing to exert themselves in the stifling heat and although France had the better chances the match fizzled out to a goal-less draw.

Thierry Henry scord for France in the ninth minute and it should have been 2-0 after Patrick Vieira's header was blocked by the Korean goalkeeper after it had crossed the line. Korea pressed forward but their attacks generally broke down as they appraoched the French goal. Barhez in France's goal had little to do until the 81st minute when he flapped at a cross which then fell to Park Ji-Sung who scooped it into the net.

Alexander Frei fired Switzerland into the lead from close range after 17 minutes and from then on the Swiss absorbed Togo's pressure and sought to hit them with counter-attacks. Togo had several chances and should have had a penalty before half-time after Patrick Müller scythed down Adebayor. Switzerland showed more ambition in the second half and the game opened up and they were rewarded 12 minutes from time with a goal from Barnetta.

After their uncertain start, France answered their critics with a win over Togo that took them into the next round. Togo defended resolutely but goals from Henry and Vieira in the second half settled the matter.

Switzerland lead at half-time after making a strong start. In the second half they sat back as the South Koreans looked for the equaliser. With 15 minutes to go the referee overruled his assistant who was flagging for offside to let Frei through on goal and put the game beyond doubt.
