The first half finished goal-less but had been hugely entertaining. After the break Wijnaldum (52') and Weghorst (58') put the Dutch into the lead but two goals in four minutes from Yarmolenko (75') and Yaremchuk (79') levelled the score. With five minutes to go Dumfries headed home a dramatic late winner for the Oranje.

A clever back heel from a corner set up Yarmolenko who tapped the ball home at the far post (29'). Five minutes later he made the pass that allowed Yaremchuk to get behind the Macedonian defence and slot the ball past the 'keeper. In the second half North Macedonia rallied, Alioski following up when his own penalty was saved but they could not find an equaliser. Ukraine had the chance to wrap the game up when Avramovski handled in the box but Malinovsky's penalty was saved by Dimitrievski.

Netherlands had already secure the top spot and now goals from Depay and Wijnaldum (51', 58') preserved the team's 100% record. Goran Pandev who had earlier become the first Macedonian to score in a major tournament finals was given a guard of honour by colleagues when he was substituted in the 69th minute of his 122nd and final appearance for his country.

Austria went through to the knock-out stages for the first time in their history thanks to a close range strike by Bumgartner, who turned a corner into the net while at full stretch. Ukraine did not look capable of overturning the score and now had to wait to see if they could scrape through as one of the four best-placed teams finishing third.
